Headache and Migraine Diagnosis and Treatment with Houma-Thibodaux Spine & Rehabilitation

Headaches affect almost everyone at some point in their lives. For those of us who suffer from frequent or chronic headaches, the pain and nearly constant interruption to our daily lives can be debilitating. The pain of frequent headaches prevents sufferers from fully participating with their families, meeting their potential at work, and living their lives to the fullest. At Houma-Thibodaux Spine & Rehabilitation, our chiropractors strive to help patients find natural relief from the detrimental effects and painful symptoms of headaches and migraines.

Understand the Difference Between Migraines and Tension Headaches

In order to understand the best ways to treat and prevent headaches in those who suffer frequently, our chiropractors first determine what type of headaches patients experience: tension or a migraine. While they share some pain symptoms which can be similar, the two types of headaches differ greatly.

Tension headaches result from muscle tension due to misalignments in the spine (subluxations), anxiety, physical stress, and musculoskeletal conditions such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). These headaches typically involve muscle pain behind the eyes, in the jaw, over the top of the head, and in the neck.

Migraine headaches are medically less understood than tension headaches. In addition to pain, these headaches often include symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, temperature, touch, and smell. Some migraine sufferers also experience what is known as an aura (visual disturbances such as flashing or tunnel vision) which occurs prior to the main symptoms of the headache event. Migraines are thought to coincide with the rapid or sudden opening or constriction of blood vessels in the neck which lead to the brain, causing quick increases or decreases in local blood pressure. Migraines typically result from certain triggers such as flickering lights, food or scent sensitivities, tension headaches, allergies, changes in schedule, or periods of stress. While migraines are not completely understood, avoiding triggers and reducing muscle tension helps reduce their frequency, severity, and duration.

Natural, Effective Relief from Headaches and Migraines with Our Houma and Thibodaux Chiropractors

With two convenient locations, our Houma and Thibodaux chiropractors provide headache and migraine patients with effective, natural pain relief, using gentle spinal manipulation and massage therapy. Muscle tension and subluxations of the cervical spine and the upper portion of the thoracic spine cause many migraines and tension headaches. Our chiropractors use spinal adjustments and massage to reduce muscle tension and return the spine to its proper alignment. During a patient's initial consultation, our chiropractor will determine the type of headaches and a suitable treatment plan. After their first adjustments, most patients experience immediate relief, reduced frequency, and shorter duration of headaches and migraines.
